Low FODMAP drinks

Fruit juice is where this aisle goes wrong: apple and pear juice are High because of excess fructose, and they are also the cheap base of most mixed juices and iced teas. Orange juice is Low in a small glass, and water, sparkling water, black and green tea and plain coffee are all Low. Coffee is Low FODMAP but caffeine is a gut trigger on its own for some people, so a bad reaction to a strong cup is not proof that FODMAPs are to blame. Kombucha is High, and so are chamomile and fennel tea, while peppermint tea is Low. On the alcohol shelf, beer is Low at one glass and wine is Low at one glass, while anything mixed with apple or pear juice is High.

Look for on the label

  • apple and pear juice concentrate is the default base of mixed juice drinks and both are High
  • high fructose corn syrup and agave sweeten many sodas and iced teas
  • sorbitol and other polyols turn up in sugar-free and no added sugar drinks
  • chicory in a coffee substitute means inulin, which is High
  • check plant milk drinks for inulin and added fibre before pouring a large glass

What people ask

Is coffee low FODMAP?
Black coffee is Low FODMAP, and so is coffee with lactose-free milk. Caffeine still speeds up the gut and irritates some people, so it can cause symptoms without any FODMAP involved.
Is apple juice low FODMAP?
No, apple juice is High because it carries more fructose than glucose, and a glass holds the juice of several apples. Orange juice in a small glass is the easier swap.
Can I drink alcohol on a low FODMAP diet?
Beer and wine are Low at one glass, so they are a question of quantity rather than a flat no. Ciders and cocktails made with apple or pear juice are High, and alcohol irritates the gut on its own.
